With the first month of 2017 already coming to a close, I know I’m a bit late to the game. However, I loved writing a post of my goals for 2016 last year. It kept me accountable and a lot more focused than I otherwise would have been so I’ve decided to do it again this year.
Let’s jump right into it — here are my goals for 2017!
MY TRAVEL GOALS FOR 2017
Live in another country
I don’t know where, when, or for how long yet, but I definitely want to live in another country in 2017! I want to continue my travel adventures by finding a job overseas and living and working in one location. This will give me time to immerse in a new culture, learn about the way of life there, and make connections with people living there. This could also make a great base for shorter trips to nearby places and neighbouring countries!
Teach or tutor English abroad
Yep, this is very much related to my first goal to live in another country in 2017. Right now, the main type of overseas job I’m looking into is teaching or tutoring English. I’m in the process of completing a TEFL course (TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language.) and I’m currently looking into China, Peru, and France to teach or tutor English.
Visit at least 3 new countries
In 2016, I ended up visiting a whopping 16 new countries. But I also went on a 3-month whirlwind adventure around Europe after graduation. I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to top 2016 in terms of the number of new countries visited; however, in terms of spending time abroad, experiencing new things, and learning about different cultures, I’m excited to find out!
Explore more of the 6ix
FYI, that’s what Drake and a few of my friends call Toronto, so I thought I would give it a try — think I’ll just stick to calling it Toronto, though.
After growing up in the suburbs just outside Toronto, followed by four years living in Hamilton during university, I’d love to explore more of the city of Toronto itself. I’d love to try new restaurants in Toronto, go to places I’ve never been before, and discover more about this vibrant city.
MY PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT GOALS for 2017
Become reasonably conversational in French
Ever since I started learning French in elementary school, I’ve always dreamed of becoming fluent in this beautiful language one day. This is the year I focus on my French!
So far, I’ve met a few people in my area who can speak French and who I can practice with from, of all places, Tinder! After months of some friends bugging me to get the app, I finally did it last month and it’s been absolutely amazing for meeting new people. Tinder is not just a hookup app!
I’ve also just taken the TCF (Test de connaissance du français) at the nearest Alliance française in Toronto and achieved a B2 in French according to the CEFR. This allows me to apply for the Teaching Assistant Program in France which, if I get accepted to, would then allow me to continue working on speaking French in France while teaching abroad!
Try (even more) new foods
I used to be the pickiest eater as a child. Vegetables? No. Fruit? No. Strange meats? No. I lived off of ice cream, waffles, and all types of junk food.
Over the years, I’ve become more open to trying new foods although, I’ve also gone through phases of constantly experimenting with new foods to sticking strictly to “safe” foods. I’d say that for the past year and a half, I’ve maintained a healthy attitude to trying new foods and I’m definitely a foodie now. I love Mediterranean food, I love Asian cuisine, I love all desserts, and I love anything with cheese!
Travel, especially, has opened up my eyes to the joys of food and how it brings people together. In 2017, I want to be even more adventurous with my food choices. When I go out, instead of ordering the same things all the time, I will try dishes I’ve never tried before. I want to try weird-looking and intimidating foods, new ethnic cuisines, and even more cheese-y items! And when I’m abroad, I’m definitely going to be trying everything I possibly can!
Read at least 25 books this year
Reading is learning. Reading is rewarding. Reading is fun.
Unfortunately, I’ve mostly forgotten about how fun reading can be for the past several years. I used to be able to easily finish a book every week, often times even more. Then high school rolled around, I discovered the time sink that is social media and the Internet, and reading assigned books and textbooks became a chore. I don’t even think I read five books in 2016.
Well, this is the year that I expand my reading horizons once again! Although I’ve seen the 50 Book Challenge floating around, I think that setting a goal of 25 is much more achievable and I’m more likely to stick to it. I will have to average one book every two weeks instead of one book a week.
This past weekend, I finished reading my first book of 2017, The Martian. And guess what? I finished it in under 48 hours! It was such a hilarious read and gave me a nice dose of space wanderlust. I’m so glad I chose this book to get me back in the grove of reading and for all you sci-fi lovers out there, I definitely recommend it!
Get a camera and learn more about photography
It was one of my 2016 goals to get more into photography, and between my 2-week Indonesia trip and 3-month European adventure, I did just that. I was constantly exposed to different scenery and played around with shooting just about everything. Over the past year of experimenting, I’ve found out that I’m really drawn to landscape photography. There’s just something about capturing the beauty around me that inspires me.
In 2017, I want to get even more into photography as a hobby by buying a camera that lets me play around with different settings and lenses. I’m going to learn to shoot in manual mode and find out what the function of all those buttons and dials are. The first things I plan to learn about are aperture settings, shutter speed, and ISO!
Walk or run at least 10k steps a day
Health is important and I think that getting more active will be good for me both physically and mentally. Although I won’t be too strict with a firm 10k steps every day, I plan to average at least 70k steps a week.
Do strength training at the gym at least 3 times a week
In addition to getting more active in 2017, it’s time to get strong! On the 2nd of January, I stepped into the very foreign place most people know as a gym. I really wanted to learn how to use the machines and start weightlifting but it all seemed really daunting. I signed up for and completed three sessions with a personal trainer and I’m so glad I did. Now, the machines don’t seem as intimidating and I feel more comfortable and confident at the gym. I paid a base membership fee and now a bi-weekly rate. This is perfect so if I’m out of the country for a few months, I won’t be losing any money and can always start going again when I’m back.
Open up and take more emotional risks
Now, this goal is kind of scary to put out there but here it is.
I’ve never needed to lean too heavily on others and I have always prided myself on being independent. When meeting up with friends or family, I always loved hearing about what they have going on in their lives but I rarely want to turn the conversation towards myself.
But now, I’m realizing that this may not be the best way to live.
In 2017, I want to work on forming deeper connections with others and strengthening my relationships. I need to be more open and less closed-off for my own good. I’m going to work on being less afraid to open up to others, on being less self-conscious sharing my thoughts and opinions, and I’m going to let myself become more emotionally vulnerable (in situations I deem fit).
MY BLOG GOALS for 2017
Publish 4 blog posts a month
It’s the end of January and this is my 4th post so I’m just narrowly making it. This year, I’m going to try to publish more posts and keep a somewhat more consistent publishing schedule. Instead of spending days upon days editing and rewording the same blog post, I’m going to try to overcome my perfectionistic tendencies and publish it after just a quick edit.
During the last four months of 2016, I did so much travelling around Europe and I have so many stories and blog post ideas to share. If I continued with my perfectionistic tendencies, I’d never be able to write about even a fraction of it. I also want to come out with more in-depth travel guides, posts that you guys find useful and enjoyable, and experiment with different writing styles. Let me know in the comments below or send me an email if you have any topics you’d like me to cover!
Increase my blog income
When I started this blog just over a year ago in December 2015, it was just for fun. I wanted a place to document my adventures and if I inspired at least one other person along the way, that would have been awesome. While I had known that other travel bloggers were making some or even their entire income from their blogs, but I never really expected that I could do that myself.
However, this past year, I started earning a few extra bucks through ads, sponsored posts, and even my very first press trip to Indonesia. In 2017, I want to be even more proactive in making money through the site. I have a few ideas on how to do this and I’m really excited to get to work on them!
Double my traffic
Many bloggers get most of their traffic straight from Google. For me, my biggest referrer is Pinterest. Over this next year, I’m going to work on increasing my organic traffic (traffic where visitors are coming from a search engine) by working on SEO. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and I’m going to be working on ways to ensure my site can be found in a search engine’s results page when people search for keywords.
Create an interactive community through my Instagram
Over the past year, I’ve focused mostly on my Instagram account. I love sharing my travel photos and travel stories through this platform and I’m pretty proud of my engagement rate over there. I currently have 64k followers and I’m hoping to reach 125k by the end of the year.
In 2017, I’m going be more consistent over there by averaging 6 posts a week. I’m going to create captions to stimulate questions and comments, I will interact with my followers more, and I’m hoping to create an interactive community for discussion where, if I’m unable to answer someone’s questions, another person can help out.
And with Instagram, of course, comes Instagram stories because I want to give you guys fun, live updates of my travel adventures! I’m currently not posting stories often but I have some exciting adventures in the works and when they unfold, I’m going to be sharing more of what I’m up to through a lot more stories!
So these are my 15 goals for 2017! I’m already working hard on these new goals and I’m so excited to see what this next year brings!
