There’s nothing like a girls’ getaway to Paradisus Rio De Oro in Cuba! I spent a week here with my sister and it was amazing to get away from it all and reconnect.
Between me travelling the world and my sister being in university, we rarely get to spend quality sister time together. When Sunwing gave me the opportunity to surprise her with a girls’ getaway in Cuba, I was beyond happy.
This trip was without a doubt the most luxurious trip I’ve taken to date. My sister and I spent an incredible seven days at the adults-only Paradisus Rio De Oro Spa and Resort, located on the beachfront on the northern coast of Holguín, Cuba.
Paradisus Rio De Oro is an eco-resort, meaning that its facilities takes steps to reduce its carbon footprint and strives to protect and preserve the environment. Plus, it’s an Ultra All Inclusive 5 Star place so all meals and alcoholic drinks are included! I couldn’t think of a better place to take my sister. Paradisus Rio De Oro is also recommended for couples, honeymooners, and wellness getaways.
Let the Girls’ Getaway Begin!
The fun started in Toronto as we excitedly checked in and got our boarding passes. This was going to be our first time in Cuba, our first time in the Caribbean, and our very first time flying together! Sunwing flies from over 34 airports across Canada to more than 50 beautiful, sunny destinations.
Here’s what it was like staying at Paradisus Rio De Oro Spa and Resort
We arrived to the dream-like place that is Paradisus Rio De Oro in the late evening and were welcomed by the most friendly and kind people. You can tell that everyone here has a desire to make this a memorable trip for you. Sparkling wine greeted us at the front desk and we were given moist hand towels to freshen up (it felt and smelt so good in the tropical Cuban weather!). Then our butler showed us to our room, giving us a full room tour, as well. We felt like royalty in the Royal Service area.
Royal Service at Paradisus Rio De Oro
Our Royal Service Junior Suite was absolutely gorgeous – definitely everything you’d expect for a five-star hotel and then some. There’s a mini-bar with a few complimentary bottles of rum and wine, a TV, free wifi access from our room, a Bali bed on the terrace, they even have a pillow and bed linen menu!
Another plus, especially if you live in the city, is that you can see the Milky Way right from your own open air Balinese shower! The stars were mesmerizing and I was honestly just gazing up, awestruck, for quite a long time.
My sister and I ended the night by ordering room service and indulging in some delicious chicken and chocolate cake. We then cozied up in our huge beds and proceeded to talk about love, life, and everything in between until we fell asleep.
The next day, my sister and I kicked off our girls’ getaway trip by heading to the beach. The sparkling warm waters felt like heaven and the quiet white sand beaches in the Royal Service area had us speechless. Random fact: those water hair flips you see girls doing are a lot harder than they look!
One year prior, in August 2016, it had been my first time seeing palm trees in Indonesia; this year, it was my sister’s turn to see palm trees for the first time. My first encounters with palm trees were such special experiences for me so I was delighted to have the chance to share the magical feeling with my sister in Cuba.
Relaxing on the Beach, Poolside, and Just About Everywhere!
We lounged on the quiet and pristine beaches; we lounged by the gorgeous pools; we also lounged in our air-conditioned room when we wanted a break from the tropical sun and sweating. I don’t know anyone who sweats as much as us, it’s crazy funny. My sister and I talked about everything under the sun and then again. Paradisus Rio De Oro was the best place to reconnect.
One of our my favourite parts of the trip was enjoying the outdoor playground that is Cuba. I took my sister snorkelling for her very first time and her reaction was priceless. “Oh my God. All the little fishies!!” Fishies was her exact wording.
We also went out into the sparkling turquoise waters by catamaran and by peddle boat. Paradisus Rio De Oro offered us a huge variety of water activities to enjoy.
If water sports aren’t your thing, other popular activities include yoga classes, Zumba and salsa classes, watervolley and beachvolley, and more!
Pampered at the Spa
One of the highlights of our stay was our spa day indulgence and getting the Cuban Rum Massage. We felt super relaxed and rejuvenated after the massage. We also got to meet Guillermo, the manager of YHI Spa. He was incredibly kind and it was clear he wanted to make sure we had the best spa experience possible.
Dining and Drinking
And, of course, let’s not forget about the food!
One of my favourite parts of going on trips is eating some really good food. Breakfasts in the Royal Service area was the perfect way to start the day. We got to order freshly-made eggs, pancakes, and more from the menu. Plus, there was a buffet full of the Freshest Mango Ever (beyond glad that it was mango season!), plenty of other fruits, baked goods, cheeses, and more. My favourite thing to order was the Spanish Fried Eggs with Ham and Potatoes, while my sister preferred the Eggs Benedict with Lobster.
The best part, though, was how we got a mini impromptu Spanish lesson every morning. ¡Buenos días! The staff always put a smile on our faces and it was nice how they knew I liked my coffee black (café negro) by the end of our stay.
Paradisus Rio De Oro offers a variety of dining options, ranging from Cuban to Mediterranean to Japanese to international to buffet. We tried all the restaurants by the end of our stay and were super impressed by the flavours. Be sure to take advantage of the all-inclusive drinks by enjoying wine or drinks of your choice with your meals. Although my sister and I don’t usually drink much, I couldn’t resist sipping a few of Cuba’s traditional daiquiris and mojitos.
One of my sister’s favourite parts was the beach party we went to on our last night there. We got to dance in the open oceanside air, she got to bust out her dance moves, it was awesome.
The Cuban People
The warmth of the people was probably my favourite part. Whether it’s lounging by the pool and spontaneously receiving beautiful flowers, or getting fresh coconut water to sip on, or bonding with staff on a golf cart as they told us about their favourite recipes and their wonderful grandma. My sister even made a pen pal!
There was so much to enjoy at the resort this first time around that my sister and I didn’t even leave. I definitely have to go back and experience Cuba outside of the resort in the future. You can talk to a NexusTours representative about excursions, such as a Cuban cigar and rum tour, a countryside adventure filled with panoramic views, a bay adventure on a luxury catamaran, a tour of the city of Holguín, and so many more. I’d love to go on a few of these and learn more about the rich history of Cuba next time.
My Favourite Girls’ Getaway Trip Yet!
Beautiful weather, stunning beaches, rejuvenating spa treatments, delicious food, warm atmosphere, and, of course, good company. Our trip to Paradisus Rio De Oro Spa and Resort was filled with pampering and togetherness. It’s the perfect place to get away from it all and reconnect with your favourite people. I’d go back in a heartbeat!
